MATH PLUS is a Migrant Education Program Consortium Incentive Grant (CIG) designed in response to substantial needs identified in migrant students in the lead state of Texas and the consortium receiving states of Arkansas, Illinois, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, and Wisconsin. MATH PLUS features interstate and intrastate coordination to provide the most highly mobile students with research- and evidence-based curriculum, instruction, and supportive services that address their special needs. The goal of MATH PLUS is to operate a high quality consortium that improves the intrastate and interstate coordination of migrant education programs by addressing key needs of migratory children who have had their education interrupted. Key activities of the project include:

• The collaboration of states and agencies to align services, curriculum, instruction, educational materials, assessment, systems for data collection and reporting, professional development, and the transfer of records to benefit students who are the most highly mobile, including intensive collaboration among partner states and regional laboratories, comprehensive centers, the MERC, and related agencies with an interest in improving, measuring, and monitoring migrant student achievement;
• An innovative, needs-based math program designed specifically for highly mobile, migrant students in grades K-12 that adapts MATEMATICA and PASS curricula for use in both the classroom and home-based service delivery;
• A design that promotes the preparation of migrant students for higher level math encompassing 5 dimensions of mathematical proficiency;
• A high quality, professional development component that is designed to provide all MATH PLUS instructors with the skills and knowledge that are needed to successfully carry out the project goal, objectives, and activities; as well as providing intensive year-round instruction to select instructors to create a cadre of mentors and resources in areas with high migrant populations;
• A Steering Team (MST) composed of a project director and a representative from each consortium state, an external evaluator, and other stakeholders; as well as a Content Advisory Team (CAT) consisting of migrant math specialists, math state directors, regional comprehensive center experts, and university/agency staff with expertise in math to build bridges across content areas and federal programs;
• The involvement of parents as partners with the school to facilitate their child’s learning; and
• The innovative use of technology for the delivery of instruction to students and professional development to instructional staff.
